Studying a Certificate IV in Textile Design for me is all about the opportunity to surround myself in like minded people and being inspired by creative talent. One of those amazing people is Rachel. She is one organised young lady, you can tell this by the way her art kit is immaculately presented, she is always the one we call on for the needle or scissors we left behind the day before. I admire Rachel for her patience, her perfectionism and the way she can produce beautiful pieces of work time and time again.
LET"S MEET RACHEL McGUIGAN - THE NEXT CREATIVE TALENT IN MELBOURNE
Most recently we were given the task of designing and creating an installation for the RMIT MoreArt exhibition and Rachel's rocks. She was approached by one of the Director's from the RMIT City Campus during the exhibition and she will now be creating her design on a larger scale for them.
Initiate into the Mysteries is the title of Rach's piece.
"Here are a collection of shibori dyed silk prayer pouches created to become your own individual talisman, the title of the piece coming from the original meaning of 'talisman'. Write your own anonymous prayer, dream or aspiration on the paper provided and place in an open pouch, then close by winding the hanging ribbon around the pouch to seal it. This then becomes your own prayer. At the end of the exhibition all the pouches will be burnt to release the prayers to come to fruition.
Each pouch represents the individual but grouped together they create a whole, a community," described by Rachel.
I witnessed Rachel hand sewing some of her individually dyed pouches, and it was difficult for me to fathom that they were going to be burnt at the end of the exhibition. It made me think how it really shows Rachel's passion and belief in the power of art! Thank goodness there are photos.
